Itinerary
Day 1
You will be picked up from your hotel at around 5.30 am. From there, you will travel to the lodge where a buffet style breakfast will be served. After breakfast, you will continue driving for approximately 3 hours to Abra Málaga (4,316 m. / 14,160 ft. above sea level). This is where you will begin your bicycle tour down the mountain. Your guide will give a quick briefing and provide all riders with the appropriate safety gear before the 3-hour mountain decent (about 34 miles or 55 km) to the town of Huamanmarca. You will experience the beauty of the snow-capped mountains and their fast-changing climate from a dry cold to a humid heat.
During the journey, you will stop several times to get your bicycle and equipment checked. We will arrive at the town of Santa María (1200 m. / 3,900 ft.), where you will have your first lunch and spend the first night at a basic hostel. Upon arrival to Santa Maria in the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to go rafting (level III and IV, during April-December) on the Vilcanota River, which crosses through part of the jungle. Keep in mind that you must be able to swim in order to participate of the rafting in accordance with Peruvian law.
Day 2
Today, you will have the opportunity to do the zip line (approx. 2 hours). This activity is optional and price is not included in the tour. After breakfast, you will be transferred to the hydroelectric plant, where the government control is located and the entrance to Machu Picchu National Park. At this point, you will start trekking to the town of Aguas Calientes for approximately 3 hours, passing through the area called Intihuatana, a small archaeological site where you guide will share an explanation to better understand the site. Then, you will continue to Inka Rakay, where you will enjoy lunch. Along the way, you will enjoy and contemplate the majesty of the Machu Picchu Mountains, Huayna Picchu, as well as other archaeological sites in the heights of the mountain. You will finish the hike in the town of Aguas Calientes, where you will spend the night at a basic hostel.
Day 3
This is the most important day of the tour, the day that you arrive to one of the 7 Wonders of the World. Your last day of the tour begins very early in the morning, in order to be able to watch the sunrise over the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. You begin the ascent from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu, with the option of hiking the 1,500 Inca steps or paying the bus fare to reach the citadel (approx. 12 USD per person). Once inside the park, your guide will provide a 2-hour tour of the ruins and most important temples within the ancient city. Afterwards, you will be free to explore Machu Picchu on your own and maybe even hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (previous reservations are needed months in advance, plus an extra fee. There are only 400 entrance tickets per day to climb these two mountains). On your own time, you will need to return to Aguas Calientes (via stairs or bus) in order to take the return train to Ollantaytambo or Cusco. Upon arrival to the train station, you will be picked up and transferred to your hotel.
