The Magnificent Inca Jungle Trail to Machu Picchu
The multi-adventure action packed Inca Jungle Trail is one of the best alternatives for reaching Machu Picchu. If you’re short on time, want to experience something different or, if you’re a little bit of an adrenaline junky; the Inca Jungle Trail is for you! With downhill mountain biking, zip lining, river rafting and, trekking you’ll be kept more than entertained with the adventures of the Sacred Valley. Aside from a two-day hike, the Inca Jungle Trail route requires the least amount of exertion with day one consisting of a 34 mile (55 km) mountain bike ride from Cusco to Santa Maria where upon arrival you can opt for a whitewater rafting adventure down Level III and IV rapids (during April-November).

The route on days two and three follows a section of the traditional Inca Trail, so expect lots of ancient steps and rocky inclines as you trek along one of the world’s most famous trails. On the third day we recommend enjoying an optional canopy zip line in the morning where you’ll fly through the treetops of the dense Peruvian jungle before starting you hike to the town Aguas Calientes. Finally, the day you’ve been waiting for arrives on day 4 as you reach the World Wonder of Machu Picchu from where you can soak up the majesty of this impressive site and immerse yourself in all its mysteries and wonders. Setting off at 3.30am on the 1 hour 30 minute hike from the town of Aguas Calientes to the entrance of Machu Picchu you’ll be one of the first ones to arrive. If you want to take it a little easier on your final day you can take the bus up to the entrance of Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes. The Inca Jungle Trail should not just be considered when the traditional Inca Trail is sold out as it is a great alternative where as well as the adventurous activities, you’ll encounter the locals to learn about how they live at such great altitudes in the jungle and what produce they grow on their fincas (farms).
